Three-Dimensional Volume Measuring of Rectangular and Other Goods with Maximum Precision

Enormous volumes of goods in boxes arrive every day at distribution centers belonging to retailers, mail order companies, and logistics and industrial companies. If these boxes are to be automatically placed in high rack storage areas, any damaged boxes, for example those with bulges and dents, need to be identified and separated from the other boxes by means of an automated contour inspection in goods receipt. If this is not done, the automated storage system could break down and goods throughput will drop.

The VIPAC D2 volume measuring system enables box contours to be inspected automatically, and provides the ideal basis for the storage system to run correctly, while ensuring high throughput in distribution centers. In motion and at speeds of up to 3 m/s, the system captures the dimensions and contours of the objects being transported up to a package size of 2500 mm x 1000 mm x 1000 mm (L x W x H). Both rectangular and non-rectangular objects placed in any position on the conveyor are captured and measured.

Using lasers, VIPAC D2 captures several thousand measurement points per object and uses these to calculate its length, width and height, as well as the box's volume. In addition to calculating the volume, an additional "contour inspection" software function can be deployed to detect any deviation from the ideal box shape, such as bulges, dents and damage. To achieve this, the smallest enclosing cube is calculated for the box and used as a basis for detecting deformations.

Laser-Based Measurement Principle:

VIPAC D2 uses the time-of-flight of light measurement principle: the sensor emits a fan-shaped laser beam, which is reflected by the object. The time taken for the laser beam to arrive back at the sensor is measured. The system uses the time measured, the speed of light and the phase displacement to calculate the distance to the object. By means of a relative movement of the conveyor system, the object passes under the scanner and a 3-D image is obtained.
