Conduent will in future use scanning LIDAR-based speed enforcement technology from VITRONIC to improve the safety of the roads in Montgomery County in the U.S. state of Maryland. Conduent is a leading global provider of automated transportation solutions. The project is to be implemented from the end of September 2022 and involves the installation of 90 POLISCAN FM1 systems, which offer both speed measurement and automatic license plate recognition (ALPR). VITRONIC is also supplying eleven Compact City Housing systems with a working height of three meters, which makes them ideal for sites where space is of the essence.
Conduent has entered into a ten-year operator contract with Montgomery County. The new VITRONIC systems will replace existing radar based speed enforcement systems with scanning LIDAR-based systems. In addition to speed measurement, the systems are also able to recognize license plates. This enables the county’s law enforcement authorities to precisely determine which vehicles are driving around their territory. In this context, ALPR is extremely useful for identifying stolen vehicles, checking that vehicle tax and insurance have been paid and finding cars for which alerts have been issued.
Even back in 2016, an IIHS study proved that the Montgomery County’s speed enforcement program had significantly reduced the number of offenses. For example, the probability of vehicles in the enforcement areas exceeding the maximum speed by more than ten mph fell by 62 percent. The risk of accidents involving serious injury and death was also reduced by 39 percent.
Scanning LIDAR technology has clear advantages over radar-based systems. For instance, precise measurements can be taken at all times and in all weather, even in heavy traffic and over several lanes. There is no risk of data capture errors due to ghosting as each measurement is uniquely assigned to the respective vehicle. Scanning LIDAR also makes it possible to clearly differentiate between vehicle classes
VITRONIC is the world's leading innovation driver for industrial image processing, enabling its customers to master the challenges of tomorrow.
The owner-managed group of companies develops forward-looking solutions in the form of specialized products and software for image-based quality inspection, identification and process optimization, which find application in the growth sectors of automation and traffic engineering.
VITRONIC solutions make an important contribution to helping shape a safe and sustainable world. The existing limits of what is economically feasible are constantly being questioned in order to achieve the highest quality and productivity, for example in the production of automotive and pharmaceutical companies. Worldwide, Auto-ID solutions in logistics centers and at cargo airports, take over the reliable and efficient recording of shipments and thus ensure a transparent flow of goods.
In the transport sector, VITRONIC offers leading technology for increased safety on the roads, for optimizing traffic flow and for recording road usage.
Open and honest dealings with our customers form the foundation for jointly exploiting technological and process potential to the full. Joint success forms the basis of long-term cooperation with companies such as B. Braun, BMW, Daimler, DHL, UPS, Toll Collect, Fresenius and Sanofi as well as with public clients.
Since its foundation in 1984, VITRONIC has been growing continuously for almost 40 years. The current annual turnover (2022) is 208 million EUR and the company is currently represented on five continents in over 80 countries with 1,400 employees.
