Wiesbaden/Zoetermeer
VITRONIC, a global leader in machine vision technology, today announced the successful go-live of the Netherlands' new truck toll enforcement system. Commissioned by the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW), the solution marks a major milestone in the implementation of one of Europe's most advanced digital toll enforcement infrastructures.
As the prime contractor, VITRONIC is responsible for delivering the enforcement control systems and key elements of the data processing solution that verify compliance with the Dutch truck toll scheme. The contract also includes comprehensive maintenance and operational services over the next ten years.
The truck toll system ensures that heavy goods vehicles correctly use On-Board Units (OBUs), which automatically record the kilometers driven on designated toll roads. By combining state-of-the-art machine vision technologies with intelligent data processing, the solution enables reliable and highly automated toll enforcement.
The deployed technology includes:
The system comprises stationary TollChecker 5 enforcement systems installed on gantries across the Netherlands, alongside movable enforcement systems, enabling flexible roadside enforcement at approximately 100 predefined locations.
The enforcement systems are based on VITRONIC's latest-generation TollChecker 5 platform, complemented by the Smart Traffic Sensor SSP X1, delivering highly accurate vehicle detection, identification, and toll compliance verification.
Together with RDW and our trusted partners, we have created a scalable solution that combines reliable enforcement with long-term operational excellence.
The project is delivered through the combined expertise of ITIS Holding companies VITRONIC and SkyToll. As prime contractor, VITRONIC is responsible for the overall delivery of the enforcement solution, including the roadside enforcement systems and key cloud-based components of the back-office platform.
SkyToll, acting as a subcontractor to VITRONIC, contributes its extensive tolling expertise by developing key back-office components, establishing and operating the required data center and communications infrastructure, and providing implementation and operational services. Following go-live, SkyToll will also operate the movable enforcement systems.
VITRONIC additionally developed cloud-based components of the back-office solution, ensuring seamless integration between roadside infrastructure and centralized processing.
Installation and on-site preparation activities were carried out in partnership with the Dutch infrastructure specialist Vialis, supporting the efficient rollout across the national road network.
The project reinforces VITRONIC's position as a trusted technology partner for governments and road authorities worldwide, delivering intelligent enforcement solutions that support modern tolling strategies while contributing to efficient, transparent, and sustainable road transport.
VITRONIC is the world's leading innovation driver for machine vision, enabling its customers to master the challenges of tomorrow.
The global group of companies develops forward-looking solutions in the form of specialized products and software for image-based quality inspection, identification and process optimization, which find application in the growth sectors of automation and traffic engineering.
VITRONIC solutions make an important contribution to helping shape a safe and sustainable world. The existing limits of what is economically feasible are constantly being questioned in order to achieve the highest quality and productivity, for example in the production of automotive and pharmaceutical companies. Worldwide, Auto-ID solutions in logistics centers and at cargo airports, take over the reliable and efficient recording of shipments and thus ensure a transparent flow of goods.
In the transport sector, VITRONIC offers leading technology for increased safety on the roads, for optimizing traffic flow and for recording road usage.
