Better measurement through laser – LIDAR use in traffic technology

The LIDAR measuring technology is based on transmitting a "fan" of laser beams. VITRONIC systems use the duration and angle coordinates of the light pulses to calculate the location data for all vehicles within the laser fan. At a high repeat rate, this laser duration measurement allows the highly accurate calculation of a vehicle's travel path and speed. In addition, the vehicle class can be determined. The infrared-range measurements use protection class 1 lasers without any inconvenience to road users.

Laser measurement offers significant benefits compared to conventional technologies – both for traffic measuring technology and toll systems. LIDAR-based traffic technology made by VITRONIC is fully automated and able to clearly detect multiple vehicles and lanes simultaneously, even in heavy traffic and using a single system.

Laser measurement is virtually resistant to interfering reflections, which makes it ideally suited for use in traffic scenarios such as work zones or tunnels where radar systems often fail. Vehicles are tracked precisely until they reach the ideal photo point and then captured. This is also true for photo proof at red lights when crossing the stop line. This technology makes elaborate lane sensor embedding obsolete.

Fully automated LIDAR-based vehicle detection on toll roads enables enforcement in free-flowing traffic. No more irritating wait times at toll booths. This helps maintain traffic flow especially in urban areas and during peak times.
